๐ About the role
State Advocate post in the NPA's National Prosecutions Service at the DPP: Kimberley office. The advocate guides investigations, prosecutes cases in all courts and handles appeals, reviews and representations. Post 35/119 in DPSA Circular 35.
โ Key duties
- Study and guide investigations in case dockets
- Decide on instituting and conducting criminal proceedings
- Draft charge sheets, indictments and other court documents
- Prepare cases for court, including getting additional evidence
- Present the State's case: lead and cross-examine witnesses, address court on conviction and sentence
- Study appeals and reviews; prepare opinions and heads of argument and argue cases
- Appear in motion applications on criminal matters
- Attend to representations
- Promote partner integration, community involvement and customer satisfaction in the criminal justice system
๐ Requirements
- LLB (serving prosecutors seeking promotion: any appropriate legal qualification)
- Right of appearance under section 25(2) of the NPA Act 32 of 1998
- At least 5 years' post-qualification legal experience
- Well-developed legal research and drafting skills
- Good knowledge of civil and/or criminal procedure
- Proficiency in prosecution/litigation and guiding investigations
- Interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
