📝 About the role
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment has 4 Docker posts in Proclaimed Fishing Harbours Management: Saldanha Bay (2), Lamberts Bay (1) and Stilbaai (1). Dockers slip vessels, run slipway machinery and maintain the slipway.
✅ Key duties
- Conduct vessel slipping
- Build bilge blocks and wedges for the main slip, and keep them aligned while the cradle moves
- Operate slipway machinery, equipment and workshop power tools
- Report faulty equipment and perform slipway maintenance
- Paint slipway infrastructure and replace worn wood on slip beams
- Clean the slip and storage area
- Perform administrative duties, emergency operations and gate duties when needed
- Follow safety measures and requirements
🎓 Requirements
- Grade 12 certificate (NQF4) or an appropriate trade test certificate
- At least 1 year experience as a handyman or relevant
- Knowledge of the Marine Living Resources Act 18 of 1998 and its regulations
- Basic understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993
- Knowledge of dry docking
- Skills in general cleaning, maintenance and handling of equipment
